Let’s assume you have never owned a water bed before. It is most likely that a friend has suggested it to you because they have heard you moaning about your bad back. So, who can give you impartial advice? High & Dry Manufacturing Ltd have been supplying retailers with individual and dual waterbed mattresses for the past twenty three years and have feedback from thousands of very happy customers.

Starting with your choice of mattress stability. Check out our short youtube video for a little guidance. Ninety percent of our retail customers will choose the super stable waterbed mattress, often referred to as 95% or one second. All these terms relate to the time it takes for the water movement to settle.

Comfort and support are achieved by adjusting the water levels. If the bed is for yourself as an individual then adjusting the water bed mattress to suit is straight forward. Adding water will make the mattress firmer whilst removing water will make it softer.
If the waterbed is for two people as a couple then a balance needs to be made to allow for the water displaced by the other person.  A couple of reasonably average weight, achieving this balance is no problem. The problem comes when one or both partners are above average weight. In order to find the best balance a compromise may need to be made. With only one person on the bed the waterbed mattress will need to be set soft to allow for the displacement of the other person. Depending on how heavy you are, there is a point where it would be advisable to opt for dual water bed mattresses, generally when a happy compromise cannot be reached.

The obvious advantage of twin waterbed mattresses is that each side will be individually adjustable to suit each person for perfect comfort. Twin water bed mattresses require temperature control for each side. This can be an additional benefit if you can’t agree on what temperature to set the waterbed heater.

The only disadvantage is that dual waterbed mattresses and an additional heater are considerably more expensive.

Here’s something I’ve been told on a romance point. (Not that I would know) Each of the dual waterbed mattresses contains half the volume of water of an individual mattress. This means that if two people happen to be on the same mattress at the same time there is very little volume for the water to be displaced to and so will be very firm. This is not ideal for when you are trying to sleep but hey hoe, who’s trying to sleep?!

Unlike adjustable beds there is little or no money being spent on marketing. The British Waterbed Association used to do a good job of promoting the many benefits such as comfort, support, warmth and hygiene. The BWA was recently disbanded due to the lack of specialist water bed shops in the UK. For this reason recommendation is the most common reason people consider a waterbed.  As a result we aim to ensure customers decide on the most suitable water bed mattresses for their needs, in turn recommending High & Dry Waterbeds to friends and family.

Can you tell me why you decided to buy profiling adjustable beds?

My doctor recommended we should get them since I suffer with acid reflux disease, it’s really unpleasant. Acid from your stomach comes back up causing heartburn and…….

OK George, you don’t need to go into detail. Just to say that when he’s lying flat it’s much worse.  And because George is shuffling about and moaning all night, I don’t get any sleep either. We went to the big bed shop but we weren’t that impressed with the quality so we went online with the help of our daughter.  We spent ages going through all the different adjustable bed websites. We found Back Care Beds website and were very impressed. It was easy to work out what we wanted because of their build your own adjustable bed page. We had a play with it and figured that it was way less money than we would have paid in the shop.

I’ve always been very sceptical about buying anything without seeing it in the flesh. Especially something so important that will affect your health. Fortunately they had a retail showroom in Portsmouth, Southsea which is only about a one hour drive for us. It was actually a pleasure. If the chap in the shop had been pushy we would have been gone, I hate that! Instead we could try all the different mattresses which we were already pretty clued up on from the website, we had even printed off pages about the mattresses.

It’s no easy task delivering millions of presents to all the boys and girls all around the world in just one night. Imagine the strain that would put on your back carrying sacks of toys, breaking and entering all those homes. Climbing those ladders and crawling down chimneys. Finishing off the look of the bed with a nice matching headboard and selecting drawers to keep his toys nice and tidy he sits back to admire the adjustable beds and amazing price.

I’m sure that you are already aware of the fact that your quality of sleep is drastically improved by sleeping with your head and feet raised. This feature shows the Serena single electric adjustable bed. The mechanism is slightly uplifted at the head end of the bed. In this instance an imaginary customer has a relatively small bedroom. As an individual profiling bed it is a good idea to order a bed of at least 3’ width which is 90cm. We make narrower beds if it is not practical to go bigger. Always allow enough space around your bed to safely get around it.

On this occasion our imaginary online shopper suffers with breathing difficulties and for this reason the adjustable bed will do wonders. Raising the head end of the bed is considerably better than being propped up with piles of pillows that slip and move. Equally important is being able to raise the foot end of the electric bed. This position cradles the occupant, helping with breathing and at the same time it will prevent them from slipping down the bed.

The mattress selected in this instance is the Pocketmatic mattress. We would like to point out that this is not a mattress we would recommend for any other reason than its low price. In comparison to the rest of our mattress range this offers the least support. Unlike our High Quality Pocket Spring Mattress which is specifically designed for use with adjustable beds, the pocketmatic mattress will not flex as well on the electric bed mechanism. We would suggest that the mattress be upgraded to enhance the benefits of the profiling bed.

Option five, choose a headboard for your adjustable bed? We have selected a range of eight of our most popular headboards. These range from a simple but pleasant flat panel headboard to our range of more elaborate headboards. A profiling bed does not really require a headboard but it does complete the look. Instead of being just another piece of furniture, it has its own character. Indeed our customer has chosen option two headboard for his  bed. A simple flat panel headboard in matching ivory suedette at just £80, as in the image shown above. Our advice would have been to spend the money on upgrading the mattress. Yes it is good that your bed looks nice, but when money is a contributing factor ask yourself why you are investing in a profiling electric bed. The answer should be firstly the health benefits comfort and support. Secondly should be the appearance of your.

For the purpose of having a low starting price we introduced the pocketmatic mattress into our mattress range. We would like to point out that the main benefit of this mattress is that it is cheap. It maybe unprofessional to state that, but High & Dry Manufacturing Ltd has built up a reputation for quality adjustable beds and waterbeds over the past twenty three years. Until the boom of the internet we relied on recommendation from happy customers. If we told customers that this was even a half decent mattress then we would be misleading them.

The Pocketmatic mattress is designed for use on an electric adjustable bed. A conventional pocket sprung mattress has a wire frame around the top and bottom edges that tie the springs in position. For this reason a conventional pocket spring mattress will not flex with the movement of the electric mechanism. The pocketmatic mattress gets around this by simply doing away with the wire frame which in turn allows the mattress to flex. What effect will this have on the life expectancy of the mattress? The honest answer is that we do not know. Considering that this low cost mattress is expected to flex with the profiling base in the same way that our high quality mattresses perform. We are not over confident and have only applied a one year guarantee. This does not affect the five year guarantee that comes with our five part mechanism. We would strongly recommend upgrading to one of our range of better quality mattresses. Whilst the adjustable mechanism provides the profile it is the mattress that provides the comfort and support, so skimping (I’m not sure that’s a real word, but the spell checker didn’t pick it up) on the mattress is a false economy. At the time of writing this article, when purchased as a complete profiling bed the price difference between the Pocketmatic and the Reflex Foam Mattress is only forty pounds. If you want a pocket spring mattress and also want quality, then the best pocket spring mattress specifically designed for an adjustable bed is as the name suggests, our High Quality Memory Foam Mattress. Priced as a single size bed, this would add one hundred and forty pounds to the price.

So if the Pocketmatic is not recommended, why do we sell it? Simple, we try not to sell it. Why do we include it in our range of mattresses? The internet means that members of the public look for cheap adjustable beds online based generally on two things, price and quality. Price first. We are more competitive  than online and bedding superstores which include a pocketmatic quality mattress. We know they are not wonderful in comparison to other mattresses. So if we offer the option of the same low quality mattress, customers can then compare prices like for like. This is not strictly true because our adjustable bed mechanism is in a totally different league for quality. We would recommend upgrading the mattress. The combined price of our prestigious five part profiling bed mechanism with your choice of our better quality mattresses should still come out less than our competitors because you are buying directly from the manufacturers. What is reflex foam, and why is so practical when used with an adjustable bed? Let’s start by discussing which mattresses are not particularly suitable.

Conventional mattresses are not designed to flex. Reflex foam will profile with the movement of the adjustable mechanism. Another reason a conventional mattress is not suitable on an adjustable bed is because the mechanism has four separate moving parts and a static section. When the head and foot ends are raised putting the occupant into a sitting position, more pressure will be exerted in this static area. Our electric profiling mechanism is designed to have adjustable tension in this area to cope with the extra loading. But what about the mattress?

Ask one of our advisers at High & Dry for an opinion on our choice of sprung mattresses and they will explain. We offer a range of five mattresses, all specifically designed for use with adjustable beds. Our entry level Pocketmatic mattress will indeed flex. This is because it is so soft however it will give very little support. Our high quality pocket spring mattress is far better engineered. Foam edges maintain the springs integrity whilst allowing the mattress to flex with the adjustable bed mechanism and provide comfort only surpassed by either our Reflex Foam mattress or either of our memory foam mattresses. The question is, how long will a pocket spring mattress last? All the marketing jargon and sales hype will sound like this is technologically the mattress to buy but have a think. We all know mattress springs soften over a period of use. This effect is less if the springs are packed closer together or a thicker wire gauge is used but a mattress expected to be adjustable requires the springs to be larger and less tightly packed in order for the mattress to flex. This compromise will reduce the life expectancy of the mattress. Secondly, if the springs are not so tightly packed, how will they cope in the long term when the profiling bed is in the slightly raised or in the sitting position with the extra load? I’m sure you can answer that yourself.

Back to our Reflex Foam mattress.

The Reflex Foam® is made using Advanced Polymer Technology and contains negligible melamine. Melamine is a hardener used in foam production and is the main reason that cheaper quality foams will break down with age.

The development of this foam makes it perfect for use in the better quality mattress industry and particularly for adjustable beds. The main characteristic of Reflex foam is that it behaves in a similar fashion as a sprung mattress without the associated problems discussed. As with the principal of a sprung mattress, the foam exerts an equal and opposite force on the body. Comfort is derived by selecting the correct density of Reflex foam. We have taken the stress out of choosing your ideal density by making the mattress reversible.

One side Medium the other Medium / Firm

One side is medium and the other is medium / firm. If you find it either too firm or too soft, simply flip it over. This is a very comfortable mattress especially when used in combination with an electric adjustable bed mechanism. It will outlast any sprung mattress. The big bonus is that we have it priced above the Pocketmatic mattress but below our high quality pocket spring mattress. All these mattress options can be compared on our build an adjustable bed feature.

Buying an adjustable bed may be a major investment. It is easy for a sales person to say “don’t worry, with our best mattress, it will only cost around seven hundred pounds” that’s ok but it’s not their money. Quite often the profiling bed is just one of many other necessary purchases and the most expensive is not an option.

One way to reduce the price is to opt for our low cost Memory Foam Mattress.  Still a very comfortable mattress with a pressure relieving top layer of memory foam. This mattress will also flex nicely to the contour or the adjustable bed mechanism.

The reduced price is achieved by using two inches (5cm) of memory foam instead of three inches (7.5cm) that is used in our High Quality Memory Foam Mattresses. Also the base foam is made from high density foam instead of Reflex Foam. Reflex foam will last longer because it does not contain melamine and is specifically designed for the purpose.
