Should we move the retail of waterbeds and adjustable beds?

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Should we move the retail of waterbeds and adjustable beds from Portsmouth to Chichester? First a brief outline of the business structure.

A short story cut long.

High & Dry Waterbeds had it’s first shop in the Tricorn shopping centre, Some of you may remember it. That was in 1989 twenty two years ago. Electric adjustable beds and nursing care beds were introduced shortly after and so High & Dry Manufacturing Ltd became the umbrella company .

Rather than throwing money away paying rent, High & Dry Waterbeds purchased a retail shop on Milton Road, Portsmouth, and Back Care Beds purchased the shop on Elm Grove, Southsea.

Cheap adjustable beds only £379

Cheap adjustable beds only £379

We have a huge stock of adjustable beds. Unlike our Serena range of adjustable beds that have many options of size, which material to choose for the adjustable bed Base and headboard.

The Majestic adjustable bed comes in a nice Belgian damask which compliments most bedrooms.

Belgian damask

Belgian damask

Two sizes are available. 2’6” x 6’6” or 3’ x 6’6” If you are only buying one adjustable bed, try to fit the 3’ because individually a 2’6” adjustable bed is very narrow. Two adjustable beds side by side is better but always buy the biggest that you can comfortably fit.

So rather than scrap the adjustable bed bases, we have decided to sell the Majestic adjustable bed cheap. The Majestic is not a cheap adjustable bed because of inferior quality, far from it. It is a cheap adjustable bed purely because we need to clear stock. It was previously on display in our trade showroom in Southsea, Hampshire. It was already a cheap adjustable bed at only £650, now reduced to only £379 excluding VAT (If you suffer from certain medical conditions you may be exempt.) Download our VAT exemption form. (If you suffer from certain medical conditions you may be exempt.) https://www.bed-adjustable.co.uk/vatform.pdf

The price of this cheap adjustable bed includes your choice of either a Reflex Foam mattress or a Pocket Spring mattress. If you wish to spend an additional £50 you can upgrade to our Memory Foam 50 mattress, or our high quality Memory Tech mattress for just £100. That would make the Majestic a high quality, cheap adjustable bed. https://www.bed-adjustable.co.uk/products/cheap-adjustable-beds-for-sale.html

Profiling and lifting height adjustable bed

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

If you require an adjustable bed but you also need it to be height adjustable.

In situations where an adjustable bed is needed and professional carers are employed it will be a requirement for the bed to be height adjustable as well as having head and foot end adjustment.  There are two types of mechanism that will raise the bed but we have discontinued the power lifting mechanism   in favour of  the all in one profiling and lifting mechanism. profiling-and-lifting adjustable bedIn our opinion the profiling and lifting adjustable bed mechanism is far safer to use. The mattress will sit at a lower height as a starting point. It will also be more sturdy having a larger footprint than the power lifter. Because the mechanism sits within the bed frame rather than free standing on the floor it will be easier to move because it will use our normal castors with brakes.

The only downside is that it is more expensive and will increase the cost of the adjustable bed. At the time of writing this, you would need to add £650 to our build a bed feature. Considering all the benefits, the extra cost is worth paying.

If the profiling and lifting mechanism is to be used next to another bed, a risk assessment should carried out by a professional.

Mattress side retaining bars for Adjustable beds

Mattress side retaining bars for Adjustable beds

Sir, I am looking for side retainers for a double adjustable bed, and a Google search provided me with a similar request in September of this year. 2 questions: What is the clipping pitch (our bed would require circa 180mm to clip between 2 slats)? Are the adjustable bed slat retainers shown still available at the price illustrated (£5 each + £6 next day carrier + VAT, Total £30.55)? If the answer to both questions is “yes”, I would like to buy a set. Many Thanks Customer details removed

Hello Customer details removed,

Unfortunately the price is now £6 each but we will keep to the old price for  the adjustable bed mattress side retaining bars. Adjustable Bed side retaining barI have attached a picture to show the pitch of the clips which are approximately 104mm.

Different manufacturers of adjustable beds vary the pitch, but only slightly, so.I suspect you may have measured the pitch of two pairs of slats instead of two individual slats. If this is the case then yes again.

thanks John

In order for us to simplify explanations and guide customers with a frequently asked questions about adjustable beds, would you object to your comments being used on our blog with your name and email etc removed?

Thanks John

Hi John,

Thanks for this. It may be that I have not described my requirement well enough, its not the bars I am after, but the mattress retaining brackets, which screw onto the adjustable bed slats, are L-shaped, and have retaining clips/lugs as part of the bracket – there was a photograph of a white bracket on the adjustable bed blog entry I found.
Looking at my bed, the slats are 2″ wide (seem to be slightly more than 50mm, so I am assuming 2″) with what I would guess is a 3″ gap between the slats themselves, giving a 7″ end to end distance (180mm). The adjustable bed was purchased from Argos a few years ago.
In terms of this thread being on your blog, no problems (with name and address removed).
Many thanks

Sorry for the late reply, but I’m still at work.

Don’t worry, I fully understood, but the adjustable bed you have is not made to the same high quality as our adjustable bed mechanism. A 3″ gap between the slats sounds excessive but, if it does the job! Our adjustable bed mattress side retaining bars can still be used by cutting off the clips and screwing down through the main body of the plastic which will line up perfectly over your slats. Using the screws will make the clips obsolete. We can pre drill and countersink them for you and remove the clips.

Thanks John

Thanks for all of this. Address for package is: Removed

Thanks once again, and best regards

Adjustable Bed Trade Customers

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

As you know the three main components of an adjustable bed are the Base, adjustable bed mechanism and a mattress that is suitable for use with an adjustable bed.
‘Back Care Beds’ is our retail division of ‘High & Dry Manufacturing Ltd’ who have been manufacturing these adjustable bed components for the past twenty two years.
Trade customers can buy direct from High & Dry Manufacturing Ltd
Retailers with multiple bed outlets,
Retailers with one bed outlet,
Retailers with related products, mobility, furniture etc,
Direct sales,
Online retailers, directories etc
We have a structured trade price list for adjustable beds that is based on predicted quantities of adjustable beds that will be ordered. Visit https://www.bed-adjustable.co.uk/trade-customers.php to register as a trade customer.
What is the definition of an Adjustable Bed ‘Trade Customer?’
Let’s start at the bottom and work our way up. We have helped several entrepreneurs to become established retailers of adjustable beds. How did they start? The normal story is an individual buying an adjustable bed for their own use. These individuals often have some previous business experience, but it is surprising how many had no business experience at all. Finding it to have made an improvement to their lifestyle, health or mobility. Looking around them to see how many other people could also benefit from adjustable beds. The second step is finding someone in need, buying the adjustable bed direct from ‘High & Dry Manufacturing Ltd’. Add a reasonable profit margin and a new adjustable bed trade customer is born!

Adjustable Bed Massager

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

We fit the adjustable bed massagers into our range of adjustable bed mattresses in our factory. The massage motors are sandwiched between the layers of foam. This means that that you get the full benefit from the massage. Simply adjust the intensity on the adjustable bed massager handset to give either an invigorating massage or nice gentle massage to send you off to sleep. The adjustable bed massager has an automatic timer that will switch it’s self off after approximately fifteen minutes. The five adjustable bed massage motors can be selected individually, so if you wish to turn off for example the number one motor in the neck area, highlight the number one button and the press the select button.

Adjustable Bed Massager

Adjustable Bed Massager

To re activate the adjustable bed massager number one, simply repeat the process. The same cam be done with each of the five adjustable bed massagers. The wave feature is particularly nice again adjust the intensity on the adjustable bed massager handset to give either an invigorating massage or nice gentle massage to send you off to sleep. You will feel the massage running up and down your back. I mentioned the intensity but the speed that the adjustable bed massagers operate is also important. Myself whilst i am meant to be working selling adjustable beds, who will notice if I have a sneaky five minute rest. The problem is that, put the adjustable bed massager on and it is not until fifteen minutes later that I wake up with customers waiting to try the adjustable beds. I prefer to have the speed that the adjustable bed massagers travel set as slow as possible because I find that more relaxing. To get the maximum benefit from the adjustable bed massager, adjust the adjustable bed so that the back section is slightly raised and the foot section of the adjustable bed is raised enough to put the small of your back in full contact with the adjustable bed mattress. This position is a nice cradled position and with the effect of the adjustable bed massager you will not need to count many sheep before you are off to sleep.

Our adjustable bed massagers are fitted inside the mattress, so if you have a memory foam or Reflex foam mattress it can be done. The fitting process of the five adjustable bed massage motors may look a bit of a bodge up, but it works. This can be done by yourself and we can talk you through exactly how to do it. It is a simple case of removing the cover from the adjustable bed mattress. Mark out and put five slits in the underside of the adjustable bed mattress about 75mm deep. Make a small horizontal cut at the 3″ depth on both sides of the slit for the adjustable bed massage motor to sit snugly in place laying flat. We supply a foam adhesive spray to close the slit after inserting the adjustable bed massage motors. Then put a small cut in the underside of the cover and drop the cables through the adjustable bed mechanism slats. connect the two cables to the handset and transformer and you are finished.

If you have a sprung mattress, there is an alternative. This is two bigger motors fixed underneath the adjustable bed to the slats. The advantage is that it is simple to fit. The disadvantages are that it is not as beneficial, more expensive and it vibrates the whole bed instead of directing the massage to you. I hope this has been of help.

In reply to an online enquiry from a someone who has an existing adjustable bed and wishes to fit an adjustable bed massager.

Why are we increasing production of our Adjustable bed mechanisms in Bulgaria?

Why are we increasing production of our Adjustable bed mechanisms in Bulgaria?

In business, if you make a catastrophic blunder, you will expect to lose your job and you would accept that. However British banks and government have cost the country billions of pounds only to be rewarded. Banks have been bailed out with tax payers money and thieving ministers let off with a slap on the wrist. The cost of this is to be recovered mainly by increased taxes.

It would be patriotic to stay loyal and remain 100% in England. But we are penalised for employing staff, face increased taxes, increased business rates, increased insurances. We now spend more time on administration than production of our adjustable bed mechanisms. We have made the decision to increase the production of our adjustable bed mechanisms in Bulgaria. Yes wages and overheads are lower, but in line with the cost of living. So we cannot be accused of exploitation. We will be better priced even than competition importing from China at the same time maintaining higher quality.
